Cathy Cassata

Contributing Writer


Cathy Cassata is a freelance writer based near Chicago, Ill., who covers healthcare, features, inspiring pieces, and how-to stories. She has 15 years of experience writing, editing, and proofreading for a variety of publications and websites. Cathy is a regular contributor to the website Healthline, in which she writes about health-related news. She also writes regularly for The Fix about addictions, mental health, forms of therapy, and sober living. In addition, Cathy writes for the pharmaceutical consulting company ZS Associates, where she communicates the company's strategy and employee stories to a global audience via the company's intranet site. Previously, Cathy wrote about topics related to mid-life health for Pause magazine, a patient-focused digital magazine published by the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She also wrote for Arthritis Self-Management magazine about topics including pregnancy and rheumatoid arthritis, breastfeeding and rheumatoid arthritis, and how massage therapy can help manage chronic pain, and for the Walgreens newsletter PRN, which is distributed to pharmacists working in all Walgreens stores. Additionally, for eight years, Cathy proofread various healthcare and nutrition-related books for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Cathy has interviewed many experts in a wide range of fields including physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, medical assistants, and other healthcare providers.

Before embarking on a freelance career, she worked as an editor and staff writer for the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) for eight years, where she wrote and edited for the association's bimonthly magazine, marketing materials, and website. She continues to write for the AAMA's member publication on a freelance basis. Cathy is versed in The Chicago Manual of Style, AP Stylebook and AMA Manual of Style, and has completed the Editing Certificate Program at the University of Chicago.
